Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised treatment using gentle, slow and rhythmic movements to encourage the natural flow of lymphatic fluid through the body.
How manual lymphatic drainage works
The lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance within the tissues. Unlike traditional massage, MLD does not use deep pressure or work directly into the muscles. Instead, light, precisely directed movements of the skin are used to encourage fluid towards the appropriate lymphatic pathways.
Because the lymphatic vessels being targeted are close to the surface of the skin, deeper pressure does not mean a more effective treatment.

How remedial massage comparesIs MLD suitable for everyone?
MLD is not appropriate for everyone, and in some circumstances medical clearance may be required.
Your health history and reason for seeking treatment will be discussed before your session. If you have unexplained or sudden swelling, an active infection, a history of blood clots, significant heart or circulatory conditions, active cancer, or have recently undergone surgery, please contact Massageology before booking so we can determine whether MLD is appropriate for you.
In some cases you will require a letter of approval from your GP or Specialist.
